Structure of Placement

Simpson & Marwick offer a summer placement scheme in both our Edinburgh and Aberdeen offices for students who are in the third year of their LLB or first year of their accelerated LLB.

Our placements last for four weeks and take place each year throughout June, July and August. The purpose of our summer placement is to give students the opportunity to experience a 'mini-traineeship' in order to discover what life is really like as a Simpson & Marwick litigation trainee.

Following an introduction to the firm, all students are assigned to a solicitor who will act as a mentor for the duration of the placement. From day one, all students are given real litigation work to do. This includes elements of legal research, undertaking wage-loss calculations, report writing, drafting pleadings, visiting client premises, taking witness statements, attending court, attending pre-trial meetings and proofs. In addition to this 'hands-on' work students are also required to complete a research project during their placement.

At the end of the placement, all students meet with the trainee committee for an exit interview. This interview focuses on the work undertaken over the four weeks and the way in which they have tackled the research project. In addition to this, feedback is given to the student and the student is also asked to comment on their experience of the placement. Student feedback is vital to us to ensure that our summer placement continues to provide students with 'real-life' trainee experience.
