1. Equality Act 2010

A reminder that, as reported in our previous bulletin, the majority of the provisions of the Equality Act 2010 will come into force on 1 October 2010.

2. National Minimum Wage Increase

The following changes to the National Minimum Wage will be effective from 1 October:-

• the age from which the standard rate becomes payable falls from 22 to 21;

• a new minimum hourly wage will be introduced at the rate of £2.50 per hour for apprentices who are employed under a contract of apprenticeship or who are engaged under certain Government arrangements in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland; and

• the hourly rates will rise as follows:

Workers aged over 21 £5.93
Workers aged 18 - 20 £4.92
Workers aged 16 - 17 £3.64
Apprentices under 19 (or in their 1st year) £2.50
