The leading advocate of his generation.
Michael has an unrivalled understanding of the litigation
process, gained from 30 years practising at the Scottish Bar and at
the Bar of England and Wales. As Head of Dispute Resolution, he
leads both the firm's award-winning litigation team and the
Advocacy Unit. As a leading advocate, he has been instrumental in
shaping current court procedure. As part of Lord Coulsfield's
working party, Michael introduced the concept of compulsory
pre-trial negotiation in personal injury actions, resulting in this
procedural change affecting some 66% of Court of Session business.
He also pioneered the use of electronic preparation and
presentation in major litigations.
Michael applies his innovative and cost-saving approach to the
leadership of the firm's Dispute Resolution department. He requires
efficient, effective and early resolution of disputes for the
benefit of clients, by negotiation and mediation where possible,
whilst ensuring the department is supported by state-of-the-art
technology.
Michael has extensive experience of all aspects of litigation
and commercial law. He has acted in high profile cases throughout
his career on behalf of international clients in the spheres of
aviation, oil and gas, the media and product liability.
Michael enjoys family activity holidays - hiking, biking, white
water rafting and ski-ing.

Michael is a visiting Professor to the University of Strathclyde
School of Law. He is an external examiner in International Dispute
Resolution and in Negotiation and Mediation at the University of
Dundee.
