Recent notable work includes:
The Fingerprint Inquiry (2009). Ranald
represented the Chief Constable of Strathclyde Police in this high
profile inquiry. The inquiry followed the controversy
surrounding a fingerprint taken at a murder scene, which was
alleged to have been misidentified as being that of a police
officer. The inquiry, which lasted many months, concerned the
investigation of the murder, the use of forensic evidence and the
conduct of the criminal proceedings thereafter. The outcome
of the inquiry is expected later this year.
Reid v Sundolitt (2007). Ranald appeared as a
Solicitor Advocate in this Inner House appeal considering the
Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations. The appeal, in
which the defence was successful, was on the question whether work
equipment being misused by the claimant could give rise to a breach
of the Regulations.
