A talented Solicitor Advocate.

Ranald is an experienced lawyer and a solicitor advocate with a broad litigation practice.  He acts for a number of major insurers, representing them in claims of the highest value.  In addition, he is well known for his work for the public sector.  Ranald acts for many local authorities and their insurers, as well as other public bodies including police and fire services.  He leads the firm's respected Administration and Public Law unit, endorsed by both Chambers Legal Guide and The Legal 500.

Ranald enjoys riding motorcycles, and prefers racing circuits to roads.  He can't wait until his sons are old enough to watch The Blues Brothers.  His favourite novel is Crime and Punishment.

Career

Qualified 1997, joined Simpson & Marwick 1995, assumed Partner 2002.

Ranald lectures at Central Law Training conferences and is a contributing editor of Greens Reparation Bulletin.

Recent notable work includes:

The Fingerprint Inquiry (2009). Ranald represented the Chief Constable of Strathclyde Police in this high profile inquiry.  The inquiry followed the controversy surrounding a fingerprint taken at a murder scene, which was alleged to have been misidentified as being that of a police officer.  The inquiry, which lasted many months, concerned the investigation of the murder, the use of forensic evidence and the conduct of the criminal proceedings thereafter.  The outcome of the inquiry is expected later this year.

Reid v Sundolitt (2007). Ranald appeared as a Solicitor Advocate in this Inner House appeal considering the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations. The appeal, in which the defence was successful, was on the question whether work equipment being misused by the claimant could give rise to a breach of the Regulations.
